Audition Information
Undergraduate auditions take place in the early Spring semester, with dedicated audition days on-campus at JMU in January and February. Our audition days give a comprehensive overview of the School of Music faculty, performance venues, and curriculum for prospective music majors.
Audition répertoire should include:
- Two contrasting solo selections - displaying musicianship, lyricism, and level of technical accomplishment (for example: Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, first movement & Shoemaker Legato Etude or Mozart Horn Concerto No. 2, 3rd movement & Rachmaninoff Vocalise or Saint-Säens Morceau de Concert & Franz Strauss Nocturno, Op. 7)
- An étude of your choice from: Kopprasch 60 Studies, Op. 6; Shoemaker Legato Etudes; or Maxime-Alphonse 200 Etudes Books 1, 2, or 3
- Ability to sight-read a short musical excerpt
- Fluency with all major and minor scales in two octaves, with arpeggios
